A gear with teeth spaced along a straight line and suitable for producing
straight-line motion (instead of in a circle).
It is used to convert a rotary motion (the pinion) to a linear motion
(the rack).
A basic rack is one that is adopted as the basis of a system of interchangeable
gears. Standard gear-tooth proportions are often illustrated on an
outline of the basic rack. A generating rack is a rack outline used
to indicate tooth details and dimensions for the design of a required
generating tool, such as a hob or gear-shaper cutter.
